Labour wins while protest parties surge ahead

Labour, as expected, ended 14 years of Tory government on 4th July but independent and minor party candidates performed strongly in the general election amid a surge of anti-Establishment political sentiment. The trend was perhaps best exemplified by the strong performance of Nigel Farage’s Reform UK party on a pledge to reduce net migration to the UK.

Early Prison Release Faces Challenges

Labour’s new justice secretary says jails have been operating at 99 per cent capacity since the start of last year. So, in an effort to combat overcrowding, the UK will plan to release thousands of prisoners at the start of September. Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood says her plan would allow some prisoners to be released after they have served just 40 per cent of their sentence in England and Wales, rather than the current 50 per cent

In November 2022, in the aftermath of the ruling of the Supreme Court that she did not have the power to hold another independence referendum, the then First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said she would use the next General Election as a de facto referendum.

The following is a report by the Coordination of Communist Nuclei in Spain, giving its analysis of the recent elections in Britain and France.

The respective victories of the Labour Party in Britain and of the New Popular Front in France must be understood as an immense vote of popular rejection of governments which, in the midst of a gigantic crisis and as direct representatives of the imperialist big bourgeoisie, have carried out the harshest policies against the working class. In this sense, the electoral results are the continuation on a national level of what happened in the recent European elections in which the low rate of participation in voting has reflected a high degree of social unrest.

NAT O: Notorious, Aggressive and Threatening

The American-led North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, NATO, was founded in April 1949. As an imperialist military alliance it was seen as a clear threat to peace in Europe by the Soviet Union. In response when West Germany joined a few years later the Warsaw Pact was established, to counter the new threat in May 1955. Following the collapse of the Soviet Union the Warsaw Pact was dissolved in February 1991. NATO, however, continued to exist.
